Sanctuary Policies Turned This Into a Tragedy

You can like him or not, but Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd is right. The chaos and tragedy in Minneapolis aren’t on the ICE agent doing his job or the driver who resisted and drove toward officers. The responsibility falls on local and state leadership.

Mayor Jacob Frey, Governor Tim Walz, and Minneapolis policies that limit cooperation with federal immigration enforcement have created this environment. These sanctuary-style policies make situations more dangerous. Activists interfere, suspects feel bold enough to run or fight, and officers are forced into split-second decisions that shouldn’t exist in the first place.

That’s why incidents like this keep happening in blue states like Minnesota, California, and New York. Compare that to Florida, where Governor DeSantis banned sanctuary policies years ago and requires full cooperation with ICE. Enforcement is usually handled through jails or targeted arrests, without mobs, car attacks, or deadly escalations.

This wasn’t inevitable. Strong leadership that enforces the law and supports officers prevents tragedies like this.
