The primary function of tribal marks is for identification of a person's tribe, family or patrilineal heritage. By the 1800's, tribal markings became highly important not only for ethnic identification but because they allowed one to retain their roots even if they were captured and taken into slavery. Traditionally, tribal marks are made by cutting or scarring the skin with sharp instruments, and the process was often carried out during infancy or early childhood
