Time flies fast. A month has already passed since this semester began. Before coming to the Systematic Theology 1 class, I didn’t know what we would discuss besides "theology." I’m grateful that I am taking this formal study of theology. Studying Systematic Theology 1 is helping me to assess what my beliefs are to have a strong foundation of faith in the Lord.

The Role of Divine Revelation

Everything starts with God’s revelation. He reveals Himself in His word and His creations. The Scripture and creation both point people to God. Science didn’t contradict what Scripture says, but instead, it supported the revelation. The religious foundation of theology also starts with revelation. Humans have this innate need for the higher being because of the truth that we are created. This need resulted in different faith traditions all over the world. Many would say that there is no absolute truth. In this time, the world is “pluralistic and relativist.” How should I, as a Christian, respond to this?

Science and Scripture: Complementary, Not Contradictory

Through the lessons discussed, many of my ideas have been solidified. First, I have always believed that science simply names, describes, and explains what God has done in His creation. While science cannot explain everything, it often supports what is written in Scripture. In short, science does not contradict the Word of God. Creation itself reveals His glory. It is amazing how the Lord uses His creation to draw people back to Him. As Romans 1:19-20 states, God's invisible qualities—His eternal power and divine nature—are seen through His workmanship, leaving people without excuse for not recognizing Him. This means that by observing the natural world, one can understand aspects of God's character and power, making denial of His existence or greatness unreasonable. As part of God's creation, I, too, must point others back to Him. Everything I do should reflect His character so that others may see Him and give glory to Him.

Religion as a Relationship with God

Second, I find the popular saying that a relationship with the Lord is more important than religion contradictory. Religion itself is a relationship, born from an innate longing for the Divine, and it provides guidance on how we should live in this world. It is crucial to carefully examine the religion we choose to practice, as it not only shapes our faith and future but also influences how we live our lives. Above all, biblical truth is most important in this matter. Without it, we cannot truly live according to God’s will. Our beliefs shape us, and religion plays a vital role in our faith. Knowing this, I must seek His truth in His Word and share it with others.

The Certainty of God’s Word in a Pluralistic World

Lastly, there is certainty in the Word of God. No matter how many 'truths' may be presented to us, we must filter them through God's Word to discern the truth that truly matters. This is not a matter of subjectivity but rather the reality that God's Word reveals the truth mankind seeks.

Therefore, I must continually seek God through His Word, for He has already revealed Himself through Scripture and ultimately through Jesus Christ. While many different perspectives may come my way, I must remain steadfast in my faith. The Lord has not left me to wander aimlessly—He has given me His Word and His Spirit to guide me in living for His glory.
