From Splinterlands to Hive: My Journey, Lessons, and Evolving Strategies

I joined Hive in August 2021 via Splinterlands. No community invited me here. It was our IT who introduced Splinterlands to me. He didn't like the game; he was into Axie Infinity. Besides, incentives in Splinterlands are too small and unpredictable compared to the crypto projects and other games he was involved in. I guessed he himself didn't know that Splinterlands is built on Hive. He failed to discover the blogging and social media aspects of Hive.

During my early months on Hive, while playing Splinterlands, I stumbled upon the Splinterlands' Weekly Social Media Challenge. At that time, I managed to publish two articles per week. I forgot the day I stopped writing, for I don't like the tribal exclusivity.

It is still fresh in my mind when Splintershards (SPS) reached close to 1 USD. That was around October 2021. My initial investment was 300 USD. In just a short time, I saw the value of my account climb to 1,000 USD. It never entered my mind that SPS would lose more than 99% of the October 2021 price. That experience is almost similar to the year I entered the Philippine stock market in 2015. I thought I was a genius.

After more than three years of playing the game, the quantity of my SPS stakes grew 13X, but I lost more than 33% of the original capital I invested. Despite the setback, I enjoy the game, and besides, it is the Splinterlands community that helped me grow my HIVE Power (HP) during my early years on Hive.

Starting in August this year, I decided to limit my SPS stakes to just 12,000. Every time I reach 13,000, I unstake the 1,000 and use the HIVE I earn either for upgrading my cards or boosting my HP. So far, I have three Summoners that reached their maximum levels.

When it comes to the remaining splinters—water, earth, and death—my cards are still too weak.

Below is the table that describes the rewards I receive, the amount of SPS I sold, and my outstanding SPS balance.

DateParticularsAddLessRemaining Balance
21 August 2024Starting SPS Balance12,998
28 August 2024Unstaked1,00011,998
17 October 2024Rewards1,19113,189
24 October 2024Unstaked1,00012,189
21 November 2024Rewards98413,173
28 November 2024Unstaked1,00012,173

It took me one month and 20 days to earn the 1,191 SPS rewards last October 17 and only 27 days to gain that 984 SPS eight days ago. I think the reason why my SPS grew faster during the latter was because I played the game more often compared to the former. All in all, I have already sold a total of 3,000 SPS since 28 August.

Tracking my ROI despite the current low value of SPS, I made another table:

DateSPSPrice in USDValue in DECValue in HIVETotal In USDTotal in PHPTotal ROI in PHP
28 August 20241,0000.006910,18339.206.89387.43387.43
20 October 20241,0000.00859,94141.728.46486.48873.91
28 November 20241,0000.010212,0843510.15595.691,469.60

Many would wonder, Why sell SPS at this point? The price is too low. Why not wait for its price to bounce?

As you can see, the price of SPS is showing some strength beginning August 28. Nevertheless, as I said above, I decided to limit my stakes to 12,000 SPS. And besides, no one knows when the price of SPS will bounce back to the October 2021 price. Or if SPS would even revisit its all-time high (ATH). And besides, I also have other Hive goals than growing my Splinterlands account, such as increasing my HP and my stakes in selective Hive Engine tokens.

We came in around the same month. It's really a great utilization of a blockchain and has opened doors to a lot more (blogging, staking, etc).

Staking SPS also gives yield, currently it's around 10%. I guess there are better yields from others though.

What is your plan for next year once the new core set comes in? Chaos Legion, which most of us have, will soon be included to Wild.
