MY PATIENTS WELLBEING BEFORE MINE

Every reward that was gotten in life comes with a risk and sacrifice that was made. Some risk are great and life threatening but nevertheless, we are bold enough to take it because of its juicy rewards.

Life is all about give and take. You give "A" to get "B." You risk loosing "A" to acquire the fortune that comes with "B."

Writting this post is also a risk I'm taking, what if I write something that is not loved by the hive community and i get downvoted?

Ever since the day we were conceived, we started the race of life as sperm cells, we have constantly been taking risk. The risk of navigating our way round the uterus to the ovum, the risk of being eradicated by the body's defense mechanism and other things, and even the risk of loosing the race and being reabsorbed by the body.

There are times in which I take life threatening risks and don't regret it.

He's about to talk about his profession.

Hell yeah you know it 😉

It all began about 3 years ago when I was still I student. I went to Federal medical center umuahia for a clinical experience and was posted to the accident and emergency section.

Being a student who started work, I was thrilled up and eager to learn ignorant of the dangers that lurk in the shadows.

COVID 19 lock down has already been called off, but there was some occasional cases that presented to the hospital. I was ignorant to this fact because all I had in mind was to throw myself in front of danger, save a life and be seen as a hero even though my life is the price to pay. That was the extent I love my profession, which is the reason I always love talking about it.

A client presented to the accident and emergency section with some complaints. On examination, the doctor diagnosed that he has COVID 19 but I was still queried until further confirmation.

Being a student who feels like a super hero at that time, I always want to do everything possible to alleviate the suffering of my patients. This patient was constantly on oxygen therapy as his SPO2 reduces when the oxygen therapy is stopped. Seeing how much he is wasting on oxygen, I became sad and looked for a way to help.

After a while of thinking, the knowledge of wholistic nursing flashed through my mind. Treating the mind, body and spirit. I immediately made more research and I got the necessary informations I needed.

Gradually, I began to implement these skills. I started engaging the patient to alleviate his depression, ignoring the danger signs in the quarantine section. I go to him with my face mask down and no gloves. I was literally not protected just to make him feel loved and better while risking my life. When engaging him in reassuring conversations, I don't buldge when he sneezed. I will just stylishly shift a little so that he do not feel like I am running away from him. I tried everything I could to make sure that his mental and emotional health is top notch while the other medical team treat his physical body.

During that time, I was always scared. What if I contract covid? Wouldn't that make me a wasted investment to my family? Many things went through my head but all that kept me going was the love for my profession.

After about 2 weeks and some days spent by the patient in quarantine, it was found out that the patient did not have covid 19. When I heard this, I was thrown to the moon as joy overwhelmed my heart. I was very happy because at last, I will not die of covid 19. Haha.

It was a crazy experience but I will do it over and over again just to make my patient happy and recover to their fullest.

The one thing I learnt from this event was to always be the hero I ought to be. No matter the circumstances, I signed up for being a nurse and must take up the risks that comes with it even though it poses a threat to my life.

Up till date, I still maintain a good communication with the patient and he always appreciates those times.

Oshey! Again doc, hehe
Well I love that motto "your patients before you". In life we have to actually sacrifice for others. Although that doesn't mean we won't take precautions where it is necessary

I always think of the precautions but patients do feel like they are germs when medical practitioners use a gloved hands to touch them.

I admire your bravery and concern for your patients but I think your action was too risky, God forbid, what if you contracted the disease then you wouldn't be able to be there for your patient anymore.

I think taking laydown precautions is very important for your safety and that of your patients.

I envy the love you put into your profession. Safety matters in every aspect of life, I prefer to be a living hero so as to save more lives, with that I would be able to fulfill more destinies, and I think you should also consider this fact, too.

Your passion for your profession shines through! It's rare to see that level of commitment. It sounds like you bonded nicely with your patient. I think it is always the love and care that we give to others during these difficult times that ends up pulling them through.

Keep being you.

I dropped in from Dreemport this evening.

Sometimes it is not the sickness that kills one but lack of care, fear, emotional and mental breakdown. Your act of bravery is commendable and that's what kindness is all about. Your love and passion for your profession will surely take you on high.
