The Metaverse: A Luxury We Cannot Afford in Today's Busy World

Hello everyone!

I was talking with some friends about this whole Metaverse stuff (as it's being quickly abandoned by the companies, especially Meta/Facebook), and we come to a conclusion that the problem of the Metaverse isn't the lack of technology. It's the lack of time.

In contemporary society, people are busier than ever. With the incessant pressure to work for longer hours, commute extended distances, and accomplish domestic errands, there is negligible leisure time available. Creating and upholding a digital persona necessitates a considerable investment of time, which is the greatest hurdle to the growth of the Metaverse: who has time for this whole Metaverse stuff? I surely don't.

Furthermore, even if forthcoming technological progressions make it possible to construct an immersive and realistic virtual world, it does not means that people will have the time to expend in them. As technology has made our lives more efficient and interconnected, it has also fostered the expectation of perpetual accessibility and productivity. People are persistently occupied, perpetually connected, and forever expected to be engaged in some activity. While the notion of spending hours in a virtual world might appear interesting, it is just not realistic for the vast majority of individuals.

Let's be honest here: consider a father who needs to work for ten hours a day to make ends meet. He has to commute for an hour or two daily. Then he needs to do his domestic chores in order to have a healthy life at home. After that, he has to spend some quality time with his kids, as he is not a shitty, absent father. Then he also has to spend some time to his wife, as he is not a neglectful husband either. In addition, he has to sleep a bare minimum to be functional the next day. He also has to spend an hour or so doing some kind of physical exercise in order to keep his health. So, when exactly will he have the time to immerse himself in the Metaverse and live his so-called second life? He can't even manage to carry out all the tasks he needs to accomplish in his first, real-world life!

What I want to say is: the Metaverse is a very interesting prospect, but it is not something that can be accomplished solely through technological advances. It requires a significant investment of time and effort, and in the current era, that is simply not feasible for the vast majority of individuals (except for a small minority of really rich people). The lack of time is a significant obstacle to the development of the Metaverse, and until this problem is addressed, it's unlikely that a true virtual world will ever become a reality. Ultimately, we need to find ways to prioritize leisure time and create a better work-life balance in order to make the concept of a Metaverse a viable possibility.
