Public schools need to be polished.

Public schools is meant for everyone that is why is it called public schools, but what we have today is the schools made for the poor masses that can't afford two square meals per day. It was not meant to be so from the beginning. It was put in place for every category of children. Today the rich have their own schools while the poor have their schools and it is what we call public schools.

Just like I made mentioned in one of the topic that talks about "equality" we are infusing stratification even in our schools. That is why we have succeed in planting the seed of private schools and public schools. I remember when I went to school, we don't have private schools scattered everywhere like we do today. I can't remember any of my mates going to any private schools. Though we had some of them, but parents don't even pay attention to them. Because the few private schools we had then can't even complete with the public schools.

FOR ME IT WAS PUBLIC SCHOOLS ALL THROUGH.

I started from St. Peter's Primary school then in Jos. In fact, then the government took over almost all the private schools owned by the churches, and the schools were properly taken care of. Teachers were also paid very well which resulted to the kind of teachings we received back. Teachers were teaching with the whole of their hearts. I know that must of us did not benefits much from those teachings because it was teacher centered education. But today what we have is students centered education.

WHAT DON'T WE HAVE IN THE PUBLIC SCHOOLS?

Eighty percent of the teachers in public schools have all that it takes to impact the learners with the required knowledge.

We have the facility to help educate the learners very well. The only problem is that it is not properly taken care of. So must of the building keep deteriorating without any show some concern of putting it in order.

Their teachers are well paid far better than most private schools. Some teachers that work with the government can share their salaries into four and pay four private school teachers comfortably.

WHAT I BELIEVE SHOULD BE PUT IN PLACE IN PUBLIC SCHOOLS.

Proper supervision needs to be done if possible every month. Some of the teachers in public schools don't take their job serious. They just come in the morning, sign the attendance book and move away to go do their personal businesses. If they are properly checked every month, I believe that it will reduce to an extent.

More seminars should be organized from time to time in order to equip the teachers very well. I think this particular one should be done every term.

Teachers should be scattered to rural areas. If we go to some rural areas teachers are not much there. You will see only three teacher teaching all the subject from primary one to six. Sometimes they don't even get to enter a class for a whole week. This is the exact thing that I saw when I was posted to a rural area for the last NPOWER badge. But when we come to big cities, so many teachers will be clustering around themselves and some don't even get to teach the students for a whole week.

I believe that when these few things are put in place, the public schools will take a good shape.
