Serbian coal miners just stumbled upon the 1,700-year-old
Serbian coal miners just stumbled upon the 1,700-year-old remains of a Roman ship that once supplied the distant reaches of the empire. The boat, a 42-foot-long flat-hulled vessel, is thought to have been a part of a fleet serving Viminacium, a trading hub of around 45,000 people that sat at the northern edge of Roman territory. And though the heavy mining machinery that first unearthed the boat slightly damaged its well-preserved prow, work was quickly stopped, leaving the stern and middle sections of the craft in excellent condition thanks to the damp earth it was found in.
