Monument to Lenin in Ulan-Ude
ULAN-UDE
The monument to Vladimir Lenin in the Buryat capital is the largest monumental Lenin's head in the world, its weight exceeds 42 tons. The height of the sculpture is 7.7 meters, together with the pedestal it reaches 14 meters.
The idea of creating the monument appeared in 1970, when the 100th anniversary of Lenin's birth was celebrated, in honor of which, as old-timers of Ulan-Ude recall, three small monuments were previously installed in the city. City planners decided to replace them with a large-scale sculptural composition on the main square. The authors of the monument were father and son - sculptors George and Yuri Neroda.

In 1970, on the square of Soviets, where the monument to Lenin is now located, there was a large square and a monument to Fallen fighters (the townspeople call it the "Spire"). According to the project of the famous architect Pavel Silberman, the territory was leveled and cleared, the square was removed, and the "Spire" was moved to Revolution Square.

Lenin's head was created by craftsmen at the Mytishchi stone-cutting plant, from there it was transported in parts on a special train. The monument was officially opened on November 5, 1971. Today, the Lenin monument in Ulan-Ude is one of the main attractions of the republican capital and the whole of Buryatia.
