Having earned the title of the city - the winner of Kazan, having survived the troubled times, when more than once it was necessary to repulse different-sized gangs, the fortress quickly lost its significance. Since the 17th century, the lands of monasteries have grown in Sviyazhsk, trade, handicrafts and local merchant households flourished. At the beginning of the 18th century, the walls of the fortress were dismantled as unnecessary, and in 1781 the former citadel received the status of a city, in which at that time almost 10,000 people lived. So Sviyazhsk became a provincial district town with monastic estates, peasant settlements and holy churches. From a military outpost, it turned into a spiritual Orthodox center of the Middle Volga region.
