NOVGOROD REGION
The Church of the Savior on Nereditsa was built in 1198 on the right bank of the Maly Volkhovets stream, not far from the Novgorod settlement, by order of Prince Yaroslav Vladimirovich. The temple, which became the cathedral of the Spaso-Nereditsky Monastery, was erected in memory of the deceased sons of the prince.
The Church of the Saviour is a vivid example of Novgorod architecture of the second half of the XII century, distinguished by its features. Like other monuments of Novgorod of this period, it is a four-column single-domed temple with a posacomar coating. A vestibule was previously adjacent to the western facade of the Church of the Savior on Nereditsa.
The facades of the church are dismembered by blades into spinning wheels. The windows, in accordance with the tradition of that time, are arranged pyramidally. The upper part of the drum is decorated with a traditional Novgorod arcature frieze, which is decorated with a curb along the lower edge. A staircase located in the western wall leads to the choirs located in the western part of the temple. The sides of the wooden choirs are separated from the transept by a wall, forming corner chambers traditional for Novgorod architecture of that time. In the south-western part of the choir there was a chapel of Nikita of Chalcedon, the altar niche of which was located in the eastern wall.
A feature of the interior of the temple are the semicircular niches located in the lower part of the walls in the altar part and in the western space under the choirs. In the central apse they replaced the cintron (bench for the clergy), in the western part of the temple, probably indicate a funerary function.
In 1199, the cathedral was painted with frescoes. The paintings, which became widely known in the middle of the XIX century, were distinguished by high quality and good preservation.
During the Great Patriotic War, the temple was in the line of fire and in October–November 1941 it was destroyed. In 1956-1958, the Church of the Savior on Nereditsa was restored according to the project of Grigory Shtender.
