GOOGLE SETTLES FOR $700 MILLION IN PLAY STORE MONOPOLY CASE
Google has agreed to a $700 million settlement in the Play Store monopoly lawsuit, with $630 million allocated to U.S. consumers and $70 million to a fund for use by U.S. states. The settlement, reached in September and now detailed by Google, addresses claims related to the tech giant's monopoly over app distribution on Android through the Play Store.
As part of the settlement, Google will expand its user choice billing program, allowing developers to use alternative payment methods for in-app purchases. This program began as a pilot in November 2022. Developers will have the flexibility to display different purchase fees within the app based on the chosen billing method by the user.
Google also committed to streamlining the sideloading process, where users install apps from sources other than the official app store. The company emphasized maintaining the current sideloading steps for at least five years without modification, although it will merge the current two-step process into one, simplifying the user experience.
While emphasizing the importance of informing users about potential risks associated with sideloading, Google acknowledged the need to enhance the sideloading process and update language addressing these risks.
The settlement follows Google's loss in the antitrust lawsuit brought by Epic Games. Google plans to appeal the decision and asserts that the case is far from over. During the trial, details of Google's agreements with companies like Spotify were revealed, highlighting the dynamics of app store commissions.
Epic Games commented on the settlement, stating that it brings "no meaningful relief" to consumers and developers. Epic Games intends to pursue "meaningful solutions" in the next phase of the case to open up the Android ecosystem further.
