Just saw the first episode of: The book of Boba Fett. I don't get the part with the sandma

Just saw the first episode of: The book of Boba Fett.
I don't get the part with the sandman. He hides inside the sand for hours. So claerly his ability to breath is compensated somehow. And yet, he was chocked to death.
Please enlighten the Shmoo with your wisdom.
