A few years back, a swim group organized by my friend in the black T-shirt. Goal: to swim in the open ocean 73 miles from La Jolla, California to Catalina Island, 22 miles off of Newport Beach, California. A charity event for veterans, they made it 40 miles and then got forced out of the water by a shark scare. Can you imagine swimming in the middle of the Pacific Ocean during the night? Crazy stuff!!!

There are quite a few sharks near Catalina Island. We see them during the outrigger canoe races. Definitely not a good time to be in the water.
