Fleas have been vectors of the bacteria responsible for pandemics of the Black Death, such as the one in the 14th century that decimated half of Europe's population at the time, as well as the pandemic in the late 19th and early 20th centuries in Europe. It should also be noted that fleas can cause severe anemia in both humans and animals, such as dogs.
