My Actifit Report Card: August 28 2024
Hello everyone! How are you all today? I hope you are doing great coz for me I am quite ecstatic today π
I say that coz I've bought a new lens today and many of us have been waiting for this for quite a while now especially us in the Canon Mirrorless community. If you guys didn't know Canon restricted 3rd party companies to make lenses for their mirrorless cameras that has been a huge bummer for us canon users. Despite that fact I still went ahead and bought myself a canon mirrorless camera a year ago just because canon has the edge when it comes to autofocus and also has a great image quality (slightly) from it's competitors. Since last year I have been struggling a lot with lenses coz canon lens are darn expensive π I currently only have 4 lenses now a 16mm F/2.8 lens, a 85mm F/1.8 lens, a 18-150mm kit lens and a 100-400mm F/8.0 lens.
Well a few months ago Canon finally announced that they are gonna open up 3rd party companies to make lenses for their mirrorless cameras and many of us were happy about it. After that Canon announcement Sigma, a major lens company, announced they are gonna make Canon RF Mount Lenses and their first release is the Sigma RF 18-50mm F/2.8 Contemporary lens. Since that announcement I have been waiting patiently for this lens to come to our local stores and I have been waiting for the last 2 months. I have heard just a few days ago it's finally here so what do I do? Well you can already see it in the photo above π
Obviously I went to the store as soon as I can and get it. You know what else? I was lucky enough to have bought the last one in stock π coz it was almost immediately sold out as soon as they've announced that this specific lens is available in their store π I really wanted this lens coz this lens will replace my 16mm F/2.8 and the kit lens 18-150mm which I use on my event photography gigs. I really hate the kit lens but I had no choice. It's aperture goes to 6.3 at 70mm which sucked really bad. Unlike this new lens which is a constant aperture lens which means it stays at F/2.8 from 18mm all the way to 50mm. It's not a very large range per se but for my event photography business it is quite perfect. I wish they had an F/1.8 version but sadly F/2.8 is their common aperture for this type of lens.
Anyways I tested it out immediately and I took some shots with this camera but sadly I was too tired from my travel that I couldn't really edit them immediately.
My first impressions on this lens is kinda uhhhh. It's not a sharp lens but probably good enough that my clients will probably not notice (unless the client is also a photographer) If many people are happy with how iPhone photos look then it's on par with that. My wife has an iPhone 12 Pro Max and image quality wise is almost the same with this new Sigma lens. So I think my client will still be happy with their photos (hopefully). The kit lens performs way better than this lens to be honest in image quality but it sucked in low light while this lens can handle low light way better than my kit lens does. I will still keep my kit lens though but I am planning to sell my 16mm since it's way too redundant now.
Anyways guys this is all for me today guys. I'm quite happy today and hopefully this lens will help me get more event shoots to pay off what I invested today π
