LOH CONTEST #144 - INTIMATE PARTNER VIOLENCE

(Edited)

Despite the fight for women's rights and gender equality in today's society, many women still suffer from intimidation, threats, and/or verbal abuse. This encounter could damage a woman's self-esteem.

Sometime ago, I was in a relationship with someone who either compared me with his ex, complained about the way I dressed, or was body shaming me. He grumbled that I was too skinny and that I should get a supplement to consume that would make me add some weight. He made it appear like he was doing me a favor by being in a relationship with me. At some point, I grew so exhausted and worn out by the relationship that I had to advise myself on what to do for the sake of my mental sanity.

In my opinion, the first step women need to take in overcoming intimidation, threats, and verbal abuse is to recognize the signs. This could either come as offensive jokes, humiliating comments, or comparisons. This behavior will let women know that they are being mistreated and need to leave the person or environment or set boundaries.

Setting boundaries goes a long way. You don't need to give people the opportunity to talk down on you. Anyone who is not giving you good vibes should be put where they belong. Learn how to say no to anything that makes you uncomfortable. Say no to anyone who's going to steal your peace of mind. Stand up for your rights.

Another way of conquering this is by having somebody who supports and loves you around. People who could share their experiences with you. Joining women's empowerment organizations or groups and getting assistance will also help in overcoming these challenges.

You could also seek legal assistance if intimidation, threats, and/or verbal abuse continue. Keeping things to yourself won't help change anything. Overcoming these challenges might be exhausting most times, but recognizing the signs, setting boundaries, having support groups, and seeking legal assistance might help women in the same way.

Above all, women should learn to love themselves. Know their self-worth and know that nothing is worth their happiness.

Learning self-esteem is a good point, our emotional health relies on it. Pleasing others at our expense is not a healthy situation at all.
