Ubisoft Cancels Ghost Recon: Breakpoint NFTs
frens, the amount of NFT projects that come and go is only accelerating. Projects are born and then die shortly after. Only the strong survive.
Ghost Recon: Breakpoint NFTs
About 4 months ago, Ubisoft launched its NFT gaming platform called Ubisoft Quartz and introduced the first game to it - Ghost Recon: Breakpoint. I wrote about it about a day after it launched, but I can't find the post to link it. However, I wrote an update post about a month after this thing launched and it was not going well at all. It turns out that these new NFTs for gaming are just NFT snake oil. They live on the Tezos blockchain but are only for use in-game.
They had promised players that minted the first Quartz NFT future drops and benefits for holding it. This was just the first test of what would happen if they introduced NFTs into a game that already had tons of players. It did not go very well.
Since these NFTs are only allowed for trading on Rarible and OBJKT, let's take a look at the volume. 3 months ago, there was a grand total of about $2750 worth of sales on the secondary market. Not too hot. Looking at OBJKT today - there hasn't been much going on at all. There has been about 120 Tezos worth of new activity in 3 months...
I'm not gunna sit there and do the math on Rarible, but it is definitely a little more activity. Just skimming over the sales since Rarible is pretty shitty and gives you literally no metrics, I'd estimate there's been about 800 Tezos in volume. Still peanuts compared to what Ubisoft expected I'm sure.
The announcement was basically like this: "Thanks for giving us your money for a couple months worth of nothing". Apparently the Ubisoft Quartz team has gone pretty much silent internally and it is not looking good for the division. I wouldn't be surprised if it gets killed off entirely after this fail of a launch.
There may be a tiny amount of hope that these Digit NFTs will be able to be used in future games, but I wouldn't hold my breathe. Usually when an NFT project fails, the company scraps the idea and tries something else. They literally hinted at this in the announcement when they said...
“Being first to take advantage of emerging trends and technology is more than core to Ubisoft’s strategy, it is part of our DNA. Ubisoft Quartz reflects this ambition and represents an incredible opportunity to learn with our community about what decentralization can bring to gaming."
Apparently what decentralization can bring to their games is about $10,000 in revenue on something they probably spent a lot more developing. Just like with any other in-game items that get sold like on Call of Duty Mobile, these things are just going to die in your wallet unless you can find someone willing to pay for them. If they wanted the players to have freedom, they'd allow these bullshit NFTs to be traded on any platform and find a way to bridge them into another game in the future.
What have we learned here today? Well, not a whole lot honestly. Don't try to inject shitty NFTs into a game that's already dead and act surprised when it doesn't make you a ton of money. If you're going to do NFTs that actually have value, make them actual NFTs and not just in-game assets. Maybe consider supporting them for longer than 4 months too. That would be nice. I can't imagine being someone who bought these on secondary market thinking they were going to succeed long term and being stuck with them now.
Thanks for reading! Much love.

lol, I honest thought I would see them cancel this long ago. The big boy gaming industries just don't have a clue on NFTs. They need some crypto people to seriously figure it out and have a correct rollout of it. There's huge potential they just need to work on getting it right. Right now it's an after thought "cool" factor and people are clearly aware of it.

Oh yeah, it could be a huge success but they're just throwing shit in the wind and hoping something sticks.
