Did you ever play Habbo Hotel?

I remember playing this game as a kid because it was so cool to chat online with random strangers for some reason. I wrote about this back in April when there was an announcement that there would be NFTs integrated into Habbo Hotel. At the time, we really didn't have a whole lot of information about how or what was going to be done. We just had a roadmap and a general overview of some things that would turn into NFTs. I spent a lot of time playing Habbo Hotel as a kid, and I really wish I had access to that account I used to use.

Shortly after I wrote that article linked above, there was the initial sale of Habbo NFT Avatars, which would not be used in the game. The good thing at the time was that these were being minted on Immutable X instead of the Ethereum chain so users didn't have to worry about fees. Ethereum fees at the time were a little insane, and Immutable X was definitely the right choice for a layer 2 solution for their NFTs. This is the same layer 2 solution that was built for Gods Unchained.

The initial NFT Avatars sold out and everyone holding one has been mining NFT credits, which can be used to purchase furni and other NFTs. NFT furni is furniture that can be used in the Habbo Hotel game or traded on OpenSea. There's all kinds of NFTs that can be used in the game from avatars, to clothes, to rooms, and more. Hell, even the different style speech bubbles can be traded as NFTs.

Habbo X will be a little bit more modern, though. This new version of Habbo will feature all kinds of really cool web3 implementations like logging in with nothing more than an Ethereum wallet. Your wallet is your account, and you can even use your ENS domain as your username! Just like The Sandbox, anyone can link a wallet and start playing with no need to purchase crypto or pay gas fees. Holding a Habbo NFT Avatar in your wallet will only enhance your experience. There are some very obvious limitations for free players, of course.

Free players will not be able to change clothes, as clothes are NFTs. This means that if you want you avatar to look any different than the default, you're going to need to grab some NFTs. Even the rooms will be NFTs, and holders of the Avatars will get one for free. Rooms come in a variety of shapes and sizes, and can even be upgraded! I'm really loving this implementation of NFTs that's super baked into the game. Though the in-game currency "hotel currency" is not a crypto token (yet?), there are play to earn mechanics.

Some NFT furni will allow you to earn or distribute hotel currency or NFTs to participants in your rooms/games. Owning an Avatar or Collab NFT from any collection will get you a boost on play to earn rewards to the tun of 5x or 15x. Obviously you won't be able to go to an exchange and sell your hotel currency, but you could sell the NFTs you purchase with them. So in essence, hotel currency does have a non-determined indirect value. Interesting to think about. I assume it will eventually become a token itself.

There's going to be a lot of ways to earn hotel currency, whatever it may end up being. This will likely spark interest from people that used to play the game to at least check it out again. I know I'm going to be checking it out as I have a weak spot for nostalgia. Even if I only play it for 15 minutes, it'll be a fun blast from the past. There's a lot more to dive into in the above linked articles, and it's honestly too much for me to write about at the moment. I'm about to do some gaming and relax.

I think they're taking a very strategic approach by building a whole new game. It doesn't disturb those that have no interest in playing with NFTs and such. They can keep playing Habbo and if they ever decide they want to dive in and potentially earn some crypto or NFTs... They have that option. Those hardcore crypto nerds like myself that want nostalgia or a chance to catch a few NFTs cheap might also be interested.
