Gala Games & Epic Games Bringing Blockchain Gaming to the Masses
Gala Games and Epic Games have partnered to introduce the first game featuring NFTs to the Epic Games world.
GRIT coming to the Epic Games Store
GRIT is an upcoming western-themed battle royale game that features NFTs, and it's coming to the Epic Games store for the masses. Gala Games and Epic Games announced this at the Galaverse convention yesterday. This is going to be the first game featuring NFTs in the Epic Games store, which is used every day by millions of gamers across the world. Hell, I use it nearly daily.
My first reaction was... "That's awesome!" but then I started looking at the game... It looks not great and hasn't had any updates since its delay to the launch in January. Hmm... Interesting that they could secure a partnership with Epic Games even though there is no playable game yet. Seems like someone shelled out some money or something. Battle royale games are huge, and a western one seems like a great idea.
The issues I see here are mostly to do with the fact that there has been no activity on their Twitter account since January. The pre-launch gameplay access has been delayed with no indication of when it will be available. The NFT horses that they claimed were very rare and airdropped to attendees were just reused Unity assets. Oh yeah, and the gameplay looks horrible.

For being a game that Epic Games is attaching their name to and launching to the masses... It looks like it was designed by some random Fiverr graphics designer. You'd think that if you want people to take your western battle royale with NFT horses that it would look at least decent. I'm no graphics designer or anything like that, but I'd bet that anyone with any level of skill could have done better with the design.
The "gameplay" footage is literally a guy spinning in circles in s building and firing a couple shots at the wall. Not exactly inspiring a lot of faith in what the actual gameplay will look like. Even looking at the game on the early access Steam page, the videos are pretty terrible. It's a great concept but man they could have spent a little more money on better graphics.
There's not even any shading! No shadows, movements look super awkward, the horses look like they're gliding instead of galloping, and the animations look very clunky. Not exactly what I'd expect from the same place that Fortnite launched.
It honestly looks like a couple newbie game designers tried to make a Read Dead Redemption style battle royale. I can't imagine how much was actually spent on the design of this game, and how much money they've made before the launch. It almost reminds me of the whole Pixelmon thing where they made like $70 million and released garbage.
If you want to inspire some hype and enthusiasm in people that might actually play your game... Spend some money and make it look good. Release some actual gameplay. Don't just buy premade models from Unreal Engine, mint them as NFTs, and send them to people. That's just a really shitty way to introduce someone to your game that's supposedly "insane in the membrane".
Look, I didn't write this article to do nothing but shit all over this upcoming game. I just find it a little funny that they want people to take this seriously as the first game on their platform featuring NFTs. The other side of that is they don't really hammer home the "Why" behind having NFT assets in the game.
They pretty much just said to show people that they can own the assets in the game. That's great but you can do that without NFTs in a way. The only difference is, you can't resell your in-game assets across different marketplaces. Just because the assets are built on blockchain, doesn't mean they're much different than existing in game assets.
Why not put Gods Unchained on the Epic Game store? It's been out for a long time and would catch the attention of a lot of people that have played games like Hearthstone. It would be able to show the power of owning your assets with an already-proven title. All I'm saying is... Blockchain and NFT games need to be introduced to the wider gamer audience in a better manner. This is not the way. It just looks like a joke.
Who got bored and whipped this game up on their old shitty laptop?
Thanks for reading! Much love.

I think this is an important step taken in blockchain-friendly gaming industry especially when we consider the reputation of Epic games in gaming industry ^^

It's definitely a step in the right direction. I just feel like they could have picked a better game.

I can feel your frustration and I'm a bit disappointed with the speed at which blockchain games are entering into the "traditional gaming"... I remember talking about how that transition is imminent when we were playing HolyBread here on HIVE...
Yes, things have changed and we are moving in the right direction, but unfortunately, that is going at a very slow pace... Who knows, maybe it's better that way?
I have picked this post on behalf of the @OurPick project and it will be highlighted in the next post!

Slower and organic is better in my opinion. I just think people developing these games need to pay more attention to how it looks to people outside of the crypto space.

This could actully be freakin huge! 2023 I feel is going to be loaded with powerful games that are like this instead of browser based. While of course browser based games will still have their place these larger launches by bigger names are really going to start breaking people into NFTs, Ownership and your gaming actully meaning something which I think is HUGE!

I really want it to be good and have a great launch. I just feel like there needs to be more substance at this point with this particular game. Getting blockchain gaming to the people that use Epic Games is huge for sure but if it looks like shit... People are not gunna be excited.

It does look pretty junk and weird running etc compared to the likes of Fortnite. But I'm sure Epic wouldn't really promote something that would threaten Fortnite lol
This.
My take is that the entire business model of legacy gaming houses has been to take advantage of and bleed out players for all they're worth.
Then get them to forget about that game and repeat the spending process on a new one in 12 months time.
So tell me why would they promote the ownership of assets and encourage community drive in the direction of THEIR game?
All this does is highlight why NFT integration into games can't be led by legacy gaming companies.
It has to come from the communities themselves.

1000%. These are not the legacy games people are used to. This is a whole new level of gaming just waiting to be taken advantage of.

Its curious that no Game Company has decided to partner with Splinterlands, a finished game
