In case you have been wondering where my profile picture comes from...
It's part of the Ghent altarpiece (also goes by the name Adoration of the Mystic Lamb; in Dutch: Het Lam Gods) painted by the brothers Hubert and Jan van Eyck (my SoMee nick name 😀) and completed in 1432.
The figure represents the Virgin Mary, mother of God. She is seated next to God. On the other side of God we see John the Baptist. Why him? Most likely because it was meant to be displayed at the then named St. John's Church (now called St. Bavo Church) in Ghent, Belgium.
