The Lost Skull Mine:



In 1874 a small company of Cavalry men out of Ft McDowell were on their way north to Fort Verde. Following the Verde River north, the soldiers made camp as there was only a couple of hours of sunlight left. With the rising of the morning sun, two soldiers asked were tasked with retrieving a horse that has gotten loose during the night. The soldiers mounted up, followed the horses tracks and retrieved the horse about 6 miles from camp. The two young soldiers were terrified as this was Apache and Yavapai land and they were all alone in it.
