Splinterlands Art Contest Week 313; Riverboat Captain

There's this popular cartoon I saw some years back, I think it's french but no matter how hard I try I can't recall the title or place the character. I am sure though that I have seen it before. He had this peaceful look and recently I have formed the habit of using calm references for strong faced and dubious splinterlands cards. This one was no exception.

The peculiar thing about this piece of art is the background. I had just finished filling the first layers and I had the thought; "Joshua, why don't you put him at sea since he is a pirate and a captain too.' Well, I did just that even before the highlights and all which if you know isn't my style. The reason I like the piece is specially because of the ease with which the background came. Usually I would've finished painting and begin pondering for a while before getting something to use but this did not only come naturally, but I think I did a well this time with the wave depiction. Most times when I do that like two entries back and previous it always comes out premature. That is progress don't you think.

I also changed the arm angles on this old man and wasn't so sure if I was entirely right too. I thought to leave out the glowing sparkling hands but I threw it in anyway at the tail end.
