A trench is a type of excavation or depression in the ground that is generally deeper than it is wide (as opposed to a swale or a bar ditch), and narrow compared with its length (as opposed to a simple hole or pit). Link
I understood the meaning and the use of trench from the war movies I have seen. To them, digging a trench is a life saver, which is true.
Trench is seen as a depressing state into the ground, and most folks make use of trenches to mean the state of depression.
Digging a trench has been a major idea in various industrial works and some important promotions, especially in construction. Trenches so far is as old as time.
