Code means the same thing whether literally or otherwise. The underlying factor still remains that it is the combination of numbers, alphabets and maybe signs too. And the major goal is to keep the privacy of it's message till it gets to the intended person.

A straightforward meaning would be the use of characters to pass a message across to someone without others being able to understand the message except the intended person.

I remember in highschool, a friend of mine came up with a suggestion that we should map out some words that we both will understand when we are amidst a crowd. It's a level of communication where we add a specific group of letters to every word we say, we understand but the others will be left in the dark. The idea was beautiful but time consuming. You have to strategically map out the words and add characters in-between and then pay attention to the details when he is responding. We eventually had to stop because of the effort and time we dedicated to it. So, code is good and it helps keep your privacy very well.
