I understand this better as an advise to someone who is in trouble with the law.
There are folks who know the right thing to do, yet they look for a shortcut out of their mess. Most even lie about the whole situation, and try to convince others to believe their lies.

To lawyer up is to get a legal representation around you to help your case. Most of what they provide are their years of experience, guidance, check and balance, and maybe confidence.

It is good to lawyer up ahead of time, that is, have a lawyer that represents you. You don't have to wait till you are in trouble before you lawyer up. You can lawyer up now against the time you really need them.
