Hehe, I didn't mean to intrude like that - inviting myself for a drink :) But yes, I'd love to meet some Hiveans around the road as it is always better to mingle with the locals when travelling.
Belgrade may not really be on the way - the current plan (which could change like a million times within next few days) is to fly to Dubrovnik, Croatia, rent a car there and head south by the coast. However, we may take the return inlands, through Macedonia, and possibly Serbia. Then Belgrade may get on the itinery ;)
If you go south from Dubrovnik, there is not much of the Croatian coast.
You would quickly find Montenegro, and even further south, Albania...
Such a tour through Macedonia is not very easy (last year I went to Valona, from Belgrade through Macedonia, there is a lot to drive). Although, with overnight stays, it is possible to perform.
Send here the itinerary you have planned if you need advice, I have driven through that entire region and I would have something to recommend, but also tell you what to avoid🙂
As for the invitation for drinks (maybe also for lunch 🙂), of course I don't consider it a self-invitation...

Yep, we'd love to discover the non-EU countries. Renting the car in one of them would be way cheaper, but I guess having an EU licence plate, insurance, and passports may be a better combo than driving around with an Albanian car (I have no clue about their insurance policies, and not about to discover them).
At this very moment, I could imagine something like:
Dubrovnik - Podgorica - Skadarsko Lake or the sea - Tiranë - Butrint or Gjirokastër or the national park south of Vlorë - Ohrid and the lakes and mountains around. And then, one of the options are Skopje - Belgrade - Sarajevo - Mostar - Dubrovnik.

I guess we'll have like 8-10 days. It's not a plan, though, it's just a draft. We may change our minds anytime, even when we're somewhere on the way :)
For the itinerary you mentioned, I think it takes two weeks. 8 to 10 days would be very tense for you.
Yeah, that's why we may opt out to skip the inlands route and return similar way from Macedonia.
