Eldest, Chapters 29-32
Chapters read:
- Conviction
- Repercussions
- Exodus
- On the Crags of Tel'naeír
Paolini quickly pivoted to Roran's perspective after dropping that info BOMB that another dragon and Rider existed. Ruthless LOL. But I didn't have to worry about this pivot much, because the book continues to COOK in a BIG way quick fast and in a hurry. I am seriously loving Roran's perspective, it could seriously be a book on it's own.
The power and fierceness in these chapters is striking. Roran's toughness seems to have infinite levels and now he seems to be spamming his charisma traits to massively high heights. The man keeps punching back whenever life punches him in the gut. I remember being amazed when I was younger reading Roran's story and I can see now how impactful his tale really was on me. Kinda eerie honestly.
Roran basically reaches a major boiling point and convinces the entire town to flee to another country by escaping through the treacherous Spine mountain range. I mean, this man refuses to lose. He talks to the whole town and just gives the speech of a lifetime. The man could start a religion.
Re-reading this I am realizing a bit more why words, more specifically stories, can be so powerful and have seriously life long impacts. Roran's story is simple but raw and rough. Re-reading this when I am older, I see how a story like Roran's kind of injected life into me without knowing it. Very peculiar, but in a tentatively good way I think. Roran really makes you feel like, through sheer determination you can achieve. Sounds simple, this is done well with Roran in Eldest. In Conviction, Roran says 'There must be a solution hidden in my knowledge, if only I'm creative enough.' I love that.
On the Crags of Tel'naeír follows the trio of epic Roran chapters and I get to finally learn more about this new Rider and dragon AGAIN HA. I still feel that same joy for Eragon and Saphira that they finally get to meet people like themselves. Oromis and Glaedr are such important and amazing characters.

Learning more about Brom, Galbatorix, Morzan and the history in general was so exciting. Up until this point, Eragon only knows so much about well, anything. So getting to know some legit history from a legend like Oromis is great. The setting of Oromis's hut, in a forest on the edge of cliff, that overlooks an infinite magical forest is just such a fun scenery to envision.
Overall these were some of the better chapters in the book. Things are happening, the plot is thickening in a big way! I remember as a reader years ago that learning of Glaedr and reading that he's GOLD was super interesting considering the dragon on the cover was RED. I actually forget how it's revealed that Murtagh becomes a Rider, I am excited to re-experience that!!
