Phillies get shutout by Marlins yesterday | Jesús Luzardo on the mound in Miami today
Well the Phillies' four game win streak came to an end yesterday. I didn't expect the streak to last super long, but it has still been a good step in the right direction recently. The Phillies' loss yesterday was their 20th, it came on May 2nd. Last season the Phillies didn't see their 20th loss until May 29th.
But yesterday, I think the Phillies just ran into an excellent pitching performance by Max Meyer of the Marlins. Truly one of the better games you'll ever see from a pitcher in general! It was an A+ game that Marlins fans may not forget for awhile. Meyer pitched a full seven innings and allowed just a single run, just a single hit, and a walk. Seven innings of one-hit baseball by Meyer turned into a full blown one-hit game for the Marlins as the Phillies couldn't get a hit in the eighth or ninth innings.
The fact that this wasn't a worse blowout is actually semi-respectable for the Phillies. The Marlins won 4-0. It was a respectable enough performance by Andrew Painter but not ideal. He pitched five innings allowed three runs on seven hits and three walks. There was some good defense by the Phils in this game at least.
So for some reason this loss didn't feel as worrisome. The Phillies responded decently after their losing streak and it was clearly just Max Meyers's night.
Today, the Phillies will send Jesús Luzardo to the mound who had by far the best start of his season last time out. It was pretty much the best start of the whole season for any Phillies pitcher. So let's see if he can find some consistency today. A win today would ensure at least a tie in this four game series.
