NFL Week 5 Power Rankings and Tier List!

Nfl week 5_20231004_001239_0000.png

After four weeks of football, teams' fates are not set in stone, but at the same time, it is a decent-ish sample size to make a decent power rankings list. Besides, even if it's a little bit early who cares. It just makes it more fun. A lot of sites and writers make rankings week by week. But I believe every couple weeks is probably a more fair way to rank teams.

The 'Lost in the Sauce' Tier

These teams are just lost in the sauce. What does being lost in the sauce mean exactly? Not really sure. But that saying just seems to fit. These teams seem fairly drunk on the field I guess HA.

32. Chicago Bears

The Bears are once again, pretty terrible so far. QB Justin Fields is running out of excuses rather quickly. Personally, I believe Fields probably should have waited a year or two before starting. BUT we live in an era of impatience it seems, in many ways really. It's Fields's third year in the league and he's won a whopping five games. Not good.

31. Carolina Panthers

The Panthers are surprisingly struggling more than I anticipated. They've been fairly scrappy, but just haven't put it all together. 2023 might be a struggle, but I don't know, I am still relatively optimistic. Tua has surprised me with his development, I won't be shocked to see rookie QB Bryce Young improve a lot in a similar way in a year or two.

30. Denver Broncos

Man, the Broncos have got a nice fanbase, it must be painful to watch their team suck really bad. Paying Russ might have been a massive miscalculation. They did win a game. But it was barely. And it was against the Bears. This team seems very much lost in the sauce.

29. Arizona Cardinals

This team could maybe, possibly, arguably, be higher in these rankings. They have been quite scrappy and they have a very solid win over the Cowboys. QB Josh Dobbs is proving why he's been kept around the NFL as long as he has been. He's been a fun watch and I love his story. I wish the Titans kept him around as QB2, but I guess we've got some decent young QBs for now behind Tannehill. The Cards are 29, but I've been pleasantly surprised by this team, I thought they'd be total poop in 2023.

28. Las Vegas Raiders

This team is weird, as they always are. Jimmy G has not been as decent as I thought he'd be and he's already injured. Dude's kinda made of glass. Yeah, I know, I'm just a blogger, I'd be toast if I were on that field. But it doesn't make it less true. Josh McDaniels still can't seem to find success as a head coach. This team is just in no man's land.

27. New York Jets

The Jets have given me similar vibes as the Cardinals. This team faced a massive challenge when Rodgers went down with an injury, and while they have definitely struggled since his injury, they've been competitive. QB Zach Wilson has shown improvement. I think he can still be a good QB.

26. New York Giants

Talk about a fall off so far. Admittedly I was fairly high on the Giants coming into the season. But now, it looks like they were over achievers in 2022.

25. New Orleans Saints

While the Saints beat my Titans, it was just barely, and it was in the always weird opening week. This was more of a gut feeling decision than anything TOO glaring. Derek Carr is banged up already, and they just don't pass the eye test for me.

The 'So-So' Tier

These teams are a mixed bag, with some borderline playoff teams. These teams absolutely could rise the ranks. Or collapse into a fiery pit of failure.

24. Green Bay Packers

The Packers have been ok. Jordan Love has potential for sure. I won't be shocked to see him get into a groove at some point in time. Not sure if it will be this year or next though. He's got nice feet under him, I like his throwing motion. Still has a lot to prove though. The Packers feel mildly odd overall. Truly a mystery so-so team.

23. Atlanta Falcons

The Falcons. Hmmmm. Quite mysterious indeed. They are like, the Titans, but the lite version.

22. Washington Commanders

QB Sam Howell is game. Still a very small sample size though. Feels like he is on the Drew Brees-Baker Mayfield spectrum in terms of style of play. Commanders just seem tricky and scrappy in general.

21. New England Patriots

Before any readers judge me too badly, hear me out. The Pats are 1-3, but they have had a really brutal schedule through four weeks. They have taken losses to the Eagles, Dolphins, and Cowboys. Three very good, if not elite teams. I won't be shocked to see them get some wins shortly.

20. Cincinnati Bengals

Well, this team has fallen HARD. Burrow injury or not, this team was top of the food chain easily coming into the season. They went to a Super Bowl and AFC Championship game in consecutive seasons, and now they are 1-3 with little signs of improvements. I still think they'd likely beat every team below them.... right?

19. Pittsburgh Steelers

While the Steelers are 2-2, they just feel super average. I know Steelers nation is getting more than antsy. Mike Tomlin may have never had a losing season, but it also feels like they are quite far away from greatness.

18. Minnesota Vikings

Uh, yeah. I think this squad is alright despite their record. But they gotta stack some wins starting like, now.

17. Indianapolis Colts

This team has surpassed my expectations. Rookie QB Anthony Richardson's ceiling feels quite high. He seems to be soaking everything in fairly quickly. He already dealt with an injury though, which is not a good look. Also, their backup QB in Gardner Minshew actually beat the Ravens, which is obviously good for the Colts, but I do find it a bit strange. But I suppose two capable QBs is not a bad problem as a whole.

The 'Above Average/Fringe Playoff Team' Tier

I believe the majority of these teams are on the right track, and have a good upside. Very unlikely to find themselves lost in the sauce anytime soon. Anything is possible, but unlikely.

16. Houston Texans

It brings me no joy to admit that the Texans very much pass the eye test. They actually did lose to the Colts, but I believe they have vastly improved since then. I just have a feeling rookie QB C.J. Stroud is going to be the best QB in this past draft. The man is polished and poised. Ugh. As a Titans fan, I can't say I'm excited to say this. Maybe I'm wrong. I've been wrong plenty of times before.

15. Los Angeles Chargers

Going into the season, the Chargers were a potential top five team. They started off poorly going 0-2, but have since bounced back. I need to see more of a dawg in Justin Herbert. This team seems good, but fairly weird.

14. Los Angeles Rams

The Rams seem to be off many people's radars, and I find that scary. They had an off year last season, but seem like they are on a mildly positive trajectory in 2023.

13. Jacksonville Jaguars

The Jags are like the definition of an above average team. They don't wow me in any single way, but they don't disappoint in any single way.

12. Tennessee Titans

I'm sorry if ESPN tells you the Titans are not good anymore. ESPN says a lot of bull crap though, so I mean that's all I gotta say there. The Titans are a physical, well coached team. I believe they are still the favorite to win the AFC South. The Titans were the AFC #1 seed WITHOUT Derrick Henry for much of 2021. 2022, everyone and their mama was injured. I am not a fan of the injury excuse, but the Titans literally made history with their injuries. The Titans are extremely close to being 3-1 as well.

11. Tampa Bay Buccaneers

The Bucs have still got pieces left from a Super Bowl Championship. Baker Mayfield is obviously not as good as prime Tom Brady, but Baker IS better than 2022 Tom Brady. This team is better than people think.

10. Cleveland Browns

This might be a high ranking to a lot of people, but this team seems like they will shake off the rust soon. They have a top three defense. They lost a close one to the Steelers, a division rival, and then they lost to the Ravens without Deshaun Watson. As long as Watson is healthy, I do expect these Browns to be a problem.

9. Detroit Lions

The Lions look really freaking good. They have a lethal recipe of a high caliber offense, good defense and a punch you in the mouth mentality.

The 'DANGEROUS Championship Caliber' Tier

At this point in time, I believe these teams have the best shot at winning the Super Bowl!

8. Seattle Seahawks

The Seahawks look solid in all phases. Geno Smith is showing he wasn't a fluke in 2022. They still have very good coaching and a reliably fantastic home field advantage. It's been wild to see them easily succeed without Russell Wilson.

7. Dallas Cowboys

The Cowboys do have a bad loss against the Cardinals, but I think the Cardinals took them by surprise. Otherwise, they have been obliterating teams. They have great potential.

6. Baltimore Ravens

The Ravens are slowly looking like the 2019 Ravens. Lamar has been better than I anticipated throwing the ball, he just must stay healthy. The Ravens could beat anyone on a good day.

5. Philadelphia Eagles

Look, to some this is a low ranking. But, I believe the Eagles are the fifth best team!! This is not an insult whatsoever. They just seem a shade off thus far despite being undefeated. Last season, they were just running through teams like a knife through hot butter. This season, nearly every game has been tight. They are still a serious force in the league though. No doubt about it.

4. Kansas City Chiefs

The Chiefs are outstanding as always, and can never be underestimated. They just seem fairly beatable in 2023 so far.

3. Miami Dolphins

The Dolphins look pretty scary to me. They got a bit humbled last week, but they are well rounded and well coached. Scary squad as of now and as long as they stay healthy.

2. Buffalo Bills

The Bills seem to have taken their opening game loss personally. The Bills have fairly quietly murdered their opponents in the three games since. They have an insane, league leading +84 point differential in 2023.

1. San Francisco 49ers

This team is a well oiled machine. Brock Purdy and Christian McCaffrey are just living their best life right now. I feel like Christian was their team's missing piece. I would not want to face this squad. Kyle Shanahan is a proven beast of a coach.

Well that wraps up my Power Rankings post. Feel free to comment on how wrong I am LOL.

Also, look at my sweet new graphics, yo!!! I love them.

Hopefully one day I'll be enjoying the Titans in a better place, with a hot pizza next to me. Oh the goals.....
