A's end up getting beat pretty soundly yesterday vs Guardians | Team looks to avoid sweep with Aaron Civale on the mound today
The A's struck first yesterday. They were up 3-1 as late as the fifth inning. But that was when the Guardians started taking over unfortunately, beginning with four runs in that very inning. The A's kept fighting in the fifth and sixth innings with singular runs, and another later on, but the Guardians were relentless. In innings 6-9 the Guardians averaged 2.25 runs an inning, before winning 14-6.
Starting pitcher Jacob Lopez struggled from the mound, and later relief pitcher Luis Morales really struggled. The two A's pitchers pitched a combined 7 1/3 innings and gave up a combined eleven runs, on twelve hits and five walks.
The A's actually recorded the same amount of hits as the Guardians yesterday, with 14 hits, but the Guardians were just more clutch. Nick Kurtz unfortunately didn't walk so his walk streak ends at 20 games. His 20-game walk streak is tied with Barry Bonds for the second longest streak in MLB history. Even though Kurtz couldn't break the record, it's still a pretty awesome accomplishment! He does still have a 27-game on-base streak.
The A's are still in first place in the AL West but just by a game. A loss today would mean they get swept and drop to .500. Aaron Civale has been reasonably consistent in 2026, so hopefully he has a gem up his sleeve today.
